Emerging issues and challenges with AI art
AI art is an amazing technology with unbelievable promise to accomplish unprecedented things, but as with any new revolutionary technology there are a number of concerns associated with it. Just as with the invention of photography there is the concern that the technical skills of artists will become devalued.
A story posted on Kotaku.com on October 13th details how someone used an AI art program to complete an image that an artist was working on live streaming on twitch. That person then posted the AI generated image on twitter and untruthfully accused the original artist of not properly acknowledging their image as a reference. While in this instance it was easy to determine the one actor’s fraudulent behavior, it is an eerie foreshadowing of where this technology could lead in the future. The ability of AI to create images to deceive and manipulate is something that we don’t have a clear response to as a society.
To bring this idea back to a teaching focus, I think this re-emphasizes the importance of digital literacy for students. Fake videos and images have always been something to watch out for, but the rise of AI could make them increasingly common. We often assume that because younger generations have grown up increasingly exposed to tech that they innately understand it, but often these are skills that take time and insight to develop.
