EDCI Inquiry #7: AI writing generators

This isn’t actually about AI art but something that I just discovered that is potentially far more revolutionary in education.  AI writing generators are now appearing that can convincingly eliminate plagiarism and improve existing writing.

Quillbot.com allows you to take a sample of text and transform it easily and for free (with available premium option of course). It also checks for plagiarism across the web.

I think this is a tool that could be fabulously useful in my own writing, but is also concerning in some ways.  Are students very quickly going to stop being writers and start being more editors?

How will educators be able to ensure that assignments are not being plagiarized when essays can be checked and AI edited beyond recognition.  Basic literacy has always been seen as such a crucial and basic skill, what happens to learning when technology can become a crutch to fill that.

There is an optimist in me that says any tool that gets students engaged and creating can possibly be of benefit long term.  In a perfect world I could see AI writing programs helping to organize their thoughts the way programs like Canva have raised the bar on what constitutes good looking slideshows.
